Breastfeeding

I have always wanted to breastfeed lil A till at least the age of 2. Yes, i gave myself a big pat for making it through half way (to be exact 15 months) of the set target. But somehow due to certain reasons which I don't wish to mention here,it does shook my determination. But that's not going to stop me from breastfeeing for the time-being, so to solve the problems I planned to cut down my pumping sessions to once then none, will just purely latch on which I clearly know that it definitely will result in a drastic decrease of milk supply (with just two latch on), which mean lil A will have less feed of BM. It's definitely not for own selfishness to stop pumping milk early than planned but to make it easy for others (which is a long story) and also for the sake of big A, so the mommy won't has to everyday like a mad women rushing to send big A to school, i don't mind being tired to do all this jobs but as it does affect my emotion, result in venting my frustration on big A whenever throw missy tantrum; i.e. she refused to wake up, insisting me to carry her so she can get to continue to sleep. poor girl!

I have been thinking about this (stop expressing) for quite awhile but have yet to put into operation. When come to think about if to stop breastfeeding one day; many times I ask myself how to!? seeing lil A gently throw herself to my chest when I ask her "Baobei... do you want to drink milk milk?" with her sweet desired look and actions, you tell me how to?! how to?!

I really not sure whether my determination power now can last me till lil A turns 2, but maybe I shall just start to be more lenient to myself; not to stress myself about the target. Afterall, breastfeeding shall be a pleasure one for a mother right. I shall let nature take it course, be more relax, not to stress whether lil A can get to drink how many feeds of BM, how many times I must express milk, etc. For the good of everyone, shall just start reducing the pumping sessions to purely latching on twice a day (last and first feeds of the day) but definitely not going to end the breastfeeding journey yet. This will save lot of time spend on expressing, I don't have to carry big bags every morning, I get to spend more time with the kids, my maid don't have to spend so much time washing my 2 sets of dual pumps and load of bottles everyday hence having no choice but to leave Lil A playing alone in the playpen which most of the time she cry to be carry which make it difficult for the maid.

Afterall, I have been making full use of my expensive high-end PIS for 30 months of operation. It's time for it to rest for awhile again.

So when to start leh???? erm...... soon soon

I know how you feel, I don't know how to stop as well. My son is 14 months & I am also still BF. I think I'm also reluctant to stop, not only my son. It's indeed a very special bond & connection I share with him. :)

Evon, yes agreed, think the mommy is the one who cannot get over breastfeeding. Till now I still feel remorseful, not breastfeed my #1 longer ( though I still breastfeed her till 13 months, but she actually stop latch on when she is 8 months old, all are EBM). You're FTWM right? Still latching on ur boy?

Gosh! IT IS 4.15AM NOW
I spent half an hour to wash my breastpump and Aisleyne's bottles.
When come to baby stuff, I super paranoid and clean.
Haha hubby must be hating me for wasting so much water.
The day before, I only get to sleep about 2 hours.
Just now trying to coax Amabel sleep.
I get her into the room about 10pm after giving Aisleyne a sponge clean
She never fail to agitate me AGAIN and AGAIN.
Refuse to get into the room, want to watch VCD.
Holding the Barney VCD, went to the DVD player and want to play it herself (she know how to operate the DVD quite sometime ago liao).
I don't let her to and ask her to get into the room.
She refused and I carried her into,
she screamed and cried.
I scared that she will frighten her meimei with the super high pitch scream and cries.
I asked her to stop crying, no matter how I pacify her also no use, she keeps crying and crying, screaming and screaming.
I know the more I do, the more she will cry and throw tantrum.
So I chose to walk away, let her cry eventually will calm down after that.
But nope, she never.
I super angry already, I give her a big scold.
Firmly tell her that if she continues, I will lock her in the naughty corner (toilet)
She very scare of it, I put her in there afew time (with supervise of course).
Only that, she will admit her fault and sadly and softly said "Sorry Mommy" with her cries.
Hai don't know this phase is going to continue for how long.
If not very soon, I will heart attack and "ki cheah"
After I calm her down, we stay in the room,
I dim the light to make her sleep but she still very energetic .
Then I breastfeed Aisleyne,
I am just too tired and I fell asleep when I breastfeeding Aisleyne.
When I woke up, Aisleyne is still on my arm, me still in siting position and her mouth is on my breast.
And Amabel is also asleep.
Aiyo... this is not the first time cause I am just so tired.
And I know it can be quite dangerous.
Can you imagine we in that position for about 2 hours.
Ha! Super right?! haha
Will try to stay awake next time
Then I faster put her down on her bed, change her diaper.
I am still super tired, but my mind keep reminding me that I haven't wash my pump for next use.
From after the 7pm pumping session, I want to wash the pumps but never got the time to wash, so busy with the 2 kids.
Everyday I only wash my face for one time, super lazy + no time to wash.
So just brush my teeth.

I let myself continue sleep for awhile, hoping I won't sleep till morning.
My mind likes keep working, after awhile I woke up to wash my breastpump.
Now I am writing this whilst waiting for the pumps to be sterilised so I can pump milk to release the breast engorgement abit. Feel abit full now.
It is ready now, got to be the mooing cow now.
Hopefully Aisleyne won't be awake so soon for feed, if not I won't get to sleep again.
Got to bathe her later at 9am.
Wish me can get more sleep.
Tata~

hey, seriously....don't need to wash your pumps and bottles for 30mins lah. mrs wong also mentioned that we shouldn't scrub the bottles too hard if not it will leave unnoticed scratches and its not good for baby too. you should also start to enlist your helper to do all these tasks since she will be taking over once you return to workforce. hope you can overcome your worries (unfounded ones) soon. Pray more, trust more and enjoy your life with jnl and your two princesses.

Oh ya, I can understand your frustration with amabel after the meetup on Thursday..i haven't met her for few months and boy, she has grown up SO MUCH! haha…but I must applaud you for your endurance and patience with her coz if I were you….oh, I can’t imagine..hee..

sz, no lah, i don't really scrub very hard, spend more time on using my finger to rub away the detergent and running it under the water longer to rinse away the detergent instead especially those super small corner where either the brush and finger can reach to clean it.
I started letting her wash Amabel and Aisleyne bottles but the pumps still i wash it cause those small small area i worry she will miss out and the detergent may still trap inside so i clean better. haha

Outside no choice I got to endure no matter what, if not she will cry and scream even louder. Dont wanna get those evil look from other again and make myself hot. If at home i will stop her, scold her and put her in naughty corner already. I am not that patience lah

Special bonding - A Battle?

My milk supply kick-in in less than 4 hours after delivery when the nurse pushed Aisleyne to me for nursing.

Aisleyne is very smart, she can suckle very well. The nurse checked whether I got milk supply, she is so surprise, just a gentle pressing, so much milk produced and she said to Aisleyne, "You are very lucky, your mommy got so much milk for you once you are borned."

Every latch-on take about 15 mins on each breast. Everything seems to be a breeze until 2nd week; sometime the breastfeeding can be a battle between us. She can latch-on for about 5 mins then start struggling.

I not sure what is happening, the problem I encountered during Amabel that time is due to the blocked milk duct and incorrect positioning. But I am sure this time is not due to that.

I called Mrs Wong's mobile phone (TMC Lactation consultant), told her my problem ->
Baby will struggle, gulp, gasp cough or choke while nursing whenever I got a let-down and when my breast is too full. Sometime she will pull off the breast or spit up the milk

She said I am having 'Forceful Let-down (Milk Ejection Reflex) & Oversupply'
and she told me never ever no wear nursing bra if I am breastfeeding, as it will cause blocked milk duct etc.

After her advices, I burp and massage baby's tummy frequently if she is swallowing a lot of air through the battle.
- start wearing nursing bra, I never wear bra for the first 2 weeks
- Pump or hand express so the breast is not too full, then put baby to the breast.
- Wait until let-down occurs, then take baby off the breast. Once the flow slows, you can put your baby back to the breast.
- Nurse more frequently. This will reduce the amount of milk that accumulates between feedings, so feedings are more manageable for baby.
- Nurse when baby is relaxed but not crying. Baby will suck more gently at this time, and the milk flow will be slower.

I try to use the above method but sometimes there is still abit of struggling between us when I never get in time to take Aisleyne off the breast when let-down occured.

My Medela PIS + a pail of warm boiled water with cloth for cleaning breast at the same time massaging breast to simulate blood flow.

I started to pump breastmilk once a day hence Aisleyne is bottlefeeding once a day.
I can express about 200ml each session; 100ml to be store in fridge and 100ml in freezer as a backup (in case low in milk supply or if I got fever where I got to stop latch on Aisleyne for days etc)

This is how i handle the following expressed breastmilk;

I stored quite alot of
Frozen expressed breastmilk in my Medela freezer milk bag and bagged in ziploc bag
- label with the date and time the milk is expressed and also it expiry date
- to consume within 6 weeks
- thawed in refrigerator and to be consume within 48 hours (including thawing process)
- taste the milk before giving to baby, if turn sour I will discard

Chilled expressed breastmilk in storage bottle and bagged in ziploc bag
- label with the date and time the milk is expressed and also it expiry date
- maintain the breastmilk in a fridge at not more then 4 degree celsius
- to consume within 48 hours
- taste the milk before giving to baby, if turn sour I will discard

-> store for one bottlefeed per day

I also start teaching my new maid on how to handle my breastmilk especially when I back to work, she is the one who will prepare the breastmilk for Aisleyne.

I keep reminding her to
- make sure she wash her hands till very clean before touching the bottle and breastmilk
- take note of the breastmilk expiry date
- to warm the breastmilk in a warmer with the water not heat up to more than 60 degree celsius or warm breastmilk in a mug of warm water.
- A slight spinning of the bottle in the warmer thoroughly heats the milk throughout the bottle, without having to shake it.
- alway test the breastmilk, make sure the breastmilk not heat up too hot (as nutrients in the breast milk may be destroyed), once it is warm give to baby.
- Test the temperature of the milk before feeding.
- Discard any unfinished remainder in an hour time upon warming up
Is really not easy being a mother, especially a breastfeeding mother with more than 1 kid.
Plus got to handle a forgetful maid!

Sleeping soundly after a fierceful battle then a contented latch-on

JAUNDICE

I just commented on HH's blog.

Poor Jaerio having high level jaundice. I could understand how sad it can be to see own baby being alway poke for blood test.

Something on jaundice which is good to know for new mommy.
Just my personally view, after some read up and also finding out about jaundice from PD when Amabel is having very mild jaundice for the two months. But I continue sunbathe her till she up to four months.

I found that most parent came to think that breastfeeding caused the seriousness of jaundice.

Breastfeeding jaundice is not a cause of worry. Breastfed babies may be jaundiced up to 3-4 months, at levels which are usually not dangerous. So never come to the conclusion of stop breastfeeding.
In fact breastmilk jaundice is very common in all breastfed babies as there is something in breastmilk that causes increased intestinal absorption of bilirubin (substance that causes jaundice). If only suspected breastmilk jaundice reaches very high, usually the doctors will recommend an interruption to breastfeeding to bring it down. Whist breastmilk jaundice doesn't result in brain damage, there may be other pathological causes that aggravate the jaundice and the doctors would need to determine that and to do so, they may ask you to stop breastfeeding so that they can do accurate blood tests. So some doctor will ask the mother to stop breastfeed just for the sick of doing accurate blood tests. Hence, I don't think there is a need to totally stop breastfeeding. Perhaps can just temporary stop giving the baby breastmilk. Instead, store it in the freezer (can keep up to 6 weeks) and give it to the baby once the level is down and continue breastfeed thereafter, so the baby can still enjoy the beneficial of the breastmilk.

There is a few types of jaundice, so don’t ever think that it is definitely the breastmilk that caused it. If there is a need for an interruption to breastfeeding, doctor will be able to advise you. I think that many people misunderstood when doctor ask them to stop breastfeeding due to jaundice, so they may think the main cause of the jaundice is BREASTMILK, But the main reason is partly because, by doing so, the doctor can do accurate blood tests to determine the cause.

There may be other conditions that cause an exaggeration of this type of jaundice, such as a more rapid than normal breakdown of red blood cells. Because these conditions have no association with breastfeeding, breastfeeding should continue. So If the baby has severe jaundice due to rapid breakdown of red blood cells, this is not a reason to take the baby off the breast. Breastfeeding should continue.

Physiologic jaundice develops in all babies (although it may be very slight and not noticeable) sometime after the first day of life because their organs are not yet able to eliminate excess bilirubin effectively. If noticeable, the yellowing of the skin and eyes usually appears about 24 hours after birth and increases until about the third or fourth day. Most often, the blood bilirubin level then gradually lowers, and the yellowing fades or disappears in about a week without causing problems.

Breast-feeding jaundice is actually caused by mild dehydration, which prolongs and intensifies physiologic jaundice. Dehydration contributes to jaundice because it makes removing bilirubin from the body even harder for babies' immature systems. Breast-feeding jaundice can occur when a baby does not get enough fluids, most often because feedings are spaced too far apart. If feedings become more frequent, this type of jaundice decreases or resolves very fast after birth. Breast milk jaundice is a rise in bilirubin levels that occurs about 10 to 14 days after birth. It is likely related to how certain components of breast milk affect bilirubin elimination in the infant.
Breast milk jaundice usually begins to fade by the second month, although a slight yellow tint may be visible throughout the duration of breast-feeding.It is alright to breastfeed and you should breastfeed even though your baby is jaundiced.
Suggested that to minimize jaundice, you nurse your baby right after delivery and you can start the first nursing within 30 minutes of delivery. You can insist that no formula, water or other fluids be given as there is scientific evidence that this can exacerbate the problem.

For my case, Amabel was sent to me for breastfeeding within an half after delivery and I total breastfeed her every 2 hours though she never drink much due to the sleepy spell . But I believe that's partly the reason why Amabel only suffered mild jaundice and recovered fast.

Since Anon is asking information on breastfeeding, then I will write a bit on my breastfeeding experience as a reply to her. More on http://mypreciousangel.blogspot.com/search/label/Breastfeeding

Many breastfeeding mothers reduce feeds or wean earlier than they would like - sometimes by choice, sometimes not. There are ways to reestablish milk supply after having taken a lengthy break from nursing, or if a mother feels that her supply isn't as strong as it once was

Yes! It really takes time to increase the milk supply. For me, my breastmilk is merely during the hospital stay because Amabel sleep 24 hours. When the nurse brings her to me for nursing, Amabel just refuse to latch-on for long, all she wants is SLEEP. Even my gynae Dr Khi, try to help me wake Amabel up, but failed. Being worry that she may not get enough milk as she never pee often and pass motion; the nurse asks me whether I want to give her formula. I firmly told them “NO”, I know once I said “Yes”, everything may not get to go what I really want which is give my baby the best food in the world called “Breastmilk”. So I told them to give her just glucose after I latch-on her. Out of the hospital, it improved, Amabel do latch on longer but very often fall asleep and stop suckler after 5 minutes of nursing. I tried to latch her very frequently to make sure she got enough milk, and encourage her to latch on. It does get better. The first 2 months my milk supply was just enough to meet my girl demand or slightly more to keep in a fridge. I not lazy, I hardly sleep, during the first 3 months. The most I sleep per day is 3 hours, because every 2 or 2 ½ hours I got to nurse Amabel.

This is what I have been doing when I breastfeeding my girl, Amabel;
  • Frequent stimulation of breast; nurse (baby does this best by correctly latching-on and with a good suckling pattern at the breast) or pump frequently; at least 8 to 12 times a day. I nurse her at least every 2 or 2 ½ hours during the day and at least every 2 or 3 hours at night. I awaken Amabel to latch-on. If Amabel is available to latch-on, this is preferable to pumping; as baby will better stimulating breasts to produce more milk. For the first 3 months I hardly sleep much. Especially the first two month (yah including confinment period which I suppose to be resting and sleeping) I only sleep the most 3 hours per day ( lack of enough sleep could be one reason why my milk supply doesn’t increase much and fast);
  • My daily routine while breastfeeding (especially the first 3 month maternity leave) is to;
    1. Prepare a pail of warm water and cloth to clean and massage my breasts for a few mins and a mug of warm water for drinking to replenish water loss through breastmilk. This will help the milk flow better and encourage the baby to continue feeding as it will help to achieve ‘let-down’ -> this already took me 10 mins for preparations and massaging breasts. See http://mypreciousangel.blogspot.com/2006/12/milk-milk.html
    2. Then latch on my girl for about 30mins, if she cranky it may even takes longer. I make sure I am using correct breastfeeding methods to position my baby and help her latch-on. Glad that I get to know more proper way of positioning baby and latch techniques from Mrs Wong (a lactation consultant in TMC, she is really a pro in breastfeeding). I consulted her due to blocked milk duct. See http://mypreciousangel.blogspot.com/2006/09/meet-up-with-mrs-wong-lactation.html. So if the baby is having trouble latching on, you may need a refresher in positioning and latch techniques.
I let my baby to nurse on each side for 15 mins or until he pulls off herself or goes to sleep then I switch to another side to try. This will ensure that the baby is getting the proper balance of foremilk and hindmilk. If she refused to nurse the other side, she maybe is having enough of breastmilk already. Then I will judge whether she is having enough by seeing how long she has nurse on that side of the breast. If she latch on for at least 15 mins and I am very sure that she do suckle and swallow the breastmilk for continuously at least 15 mins. I will stop nursing her and let the pump do the job.
    3. I then need to assemble the breastpump and change another pail of warm water to clean and massage the breast again -> this takes me another 5 mins.
    4. Use pump to express out the excess breastmilk in the breasts. -> Took me about 35mins - 45mins depend how much milk left in the breast (I take so long because am using single Avent manual pump initially, the suction is not powerful to empty my breasts and my hands is damn aching. Then I changed to Avent electric single pump so that my hand won’t ache but it still takes me about 35 - 40mins pumping.)
I would advise using a double, electric breast pump with a double collection system as told by my lactation consultant, Mrs Wong, that it could better empties the breast compare to low end electric pump. And double pumping has been shown to increase Prolactin levels. Prolactin is the hormone which stimulates milk production. So I changed to ‘Medela Pump-In-Style (PIS)’ breastpump which cost $700 and it took me about 20mins only. Pump right after you finish breastfeeding. Do this after as many feedings as possible. Using a pump gives extra breast stimulation. And, pumping after breastfeeding empties your breasts more completely which is helps increase your milk supply. At first you may not get any milk out when you are pumping. But within 1 week, your milk supply should increase.
    5. After I consult the lactation consultant. I added this step which is follow by manually use hands to squeeze out excess breastmilk till no single drop of milk in the breast duct. This will prevent and ensure no blocked milk duct. Emptying your breasts stimulates your breasts to make more milk. And, the amount of milk your body makes decreases if your breasts are not emptied. Making breastmilk is done on the "supply and demand" rule. The more milk taken from your breasts, the more milk your body makes. -> this take me another 5 to 10mins
    6. Lastly I still got to wash the breastpump and accessories plus milk bottles myself though I got maid but I worry she can never wash the things clean enough. I only trust myself so I got to do it myself. -> This took me 20mins (very long right? I wash very long cause I scare not clean enough.)
Total time taken to increase supply, took me at least 1 ½ hours to finish the above things.
Guess what? After playing with my girl for awhile or do a little bit of my stuff like cleaning my stitches etc very fast 2hours already, almost time for my girl to latch-on for milk again. The most I delay nursing her to rest for 30mins. And the routines repeat again and again, same for at night. Like that how to sleep right? After consult the lactation consultant and with continuing hardwork in latch on, pumping and emptying breast every feeds for sometimes. I do have ample of breastmilk. I can pump at least 900ml to 1.1 litres per day (if I remember correctly). During the 3rd month, I slowly drag the feeding interval- 3 to 4 hrs to next feed, and i reduced the pumping sessions per day. So after I go back to work, I only pump 4 times a day so my supply do drop abit to about 800ml per day after I went back to work.
  • I do keep a breastfeeding diary. Include the times I have breastfed, and the times and numbers of Amabel’s wet and dirty diapers. I wrote down the amount of expressed breastmilk that I give her and the amount she finished. You can be sure that your baby is getting enough by counting his wet diapers and bowel movements. Till now even though I have stop breastfeeding her for half a year, I still recording what Amabel have been eating for her meal and her milk intake per day. I make sure she drink and eat enough daily.
  • I ensure the proper way of handling breastmilk. See my precious post http://mypreciousangel.blogspot.com/2008/03/breastmilk-is-normal-food-for-babies.html
  • Avoid supplements including solid food, water, juice, and formula. I do intro formula when my supply cannot meet Amabel demand. Amabel intake per day can hit up to 900ml + per day. I am working hard to increase more milk supply to catch up her demand and I can't meet her demand those few days that I need to intro one feed of formula milk to her per day for about 2 or 3 days while waiting for my supply to increase. Amabel milk intake do reduce abit to about 800ml per day after I went back to work and I still able to meet her demand. When she about to hit 6 months, I start intro her one feed of cereal with homemade fruit puree and therefore her milk intake reduce by one feed, but I still continue to ensure I produce the usual amount of milk supply for her. Those milk which expired, i will use to bathe. Hehe! Sometimes Amabel may have a period of time, where suddenly her milk intake increased for a few days and this is the time where I need to supplement her with abit of formula milk (one feed per day for some days). Another thing is that my PIL always ask me to offer her water. But I insist no water for her because breastmilk is already good source of water.
  • I try to eat often on foods rich in protein and calcium.
  • Rest as much as you can but I hardly lah.
  • I know from some mommy that once they intro bottle for expressed breastmilk to baby, Baby start to reject latching on. For Amabel no problem, she can take on bottle and latch on as well. But I will suggest those who have this problem can baby expressed breastmilk by cup, syringe or dropper.

Some extra information which I know but never consume before.
We can Increase Supply with

1) Medicinal Herbs
In addition to frequent stimulation of the breast. Here are herbal remedies that have been reported as boosting milk supply: Herbal teas

  • Try Mother's Milk Tea, which is said to promote "healthy lactation."
  • Some mothers have found that the herb, Fenugreek, is helpful for increasing milk supply. It works best when combined with increased frequency of nursing and/or pumping.

2) Prescription Medication
There are a few prescription medications that, when taken while continuing frequent stimulation of the breast, have been found to raise prolactin levels. This, in turn, increases milk supply
My gynea prescripted ‘Domperidone’ to me when I complain not able to meet Amabel huge demand. But in the end I never consume it at all. Cause I still prefer the natural way of increasing the milk supply.

Here is what I search online for this medication:
DomperidoneThis is the option with fewer side effects; it has been approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use in breastfeeding mothers. Unfortunately, it is not available in regular pharmacies in the United States. It is used in Canada and other countries, but it is legal in America; a mother can obtain it by ordering (with a doctor's prescription) from compounding pharmacies in the U.S. Outside of the U.S. (Mexico and New Zealand), no prescription is needed. The typical dosage that is recommended is 20mg, four times a day.

Weaning breastfeed

When 3 meals per day of solid food is introduced when she turn 9 months... Amabel per day intake also reduced to 720ml to 780ml. While I also start to reduce pumping sessions to 2 times per day (still able to express about 750ml per day). The with the decision to wean off breastmilk in later part, I slowly introduce formula milk once per day and over afew weeks -increased to 2 feeds (whilst I will not totally empty the breastmilk, so my breastmilk will reduce slowly) then to 3 feed when she turned 13 months. This is when I totally stop breastfeeding. And I really feel very bad that i stopped so early; till now still regretting.

I very encourage mother to breastfeed as long as possible. I will definitely going to breastfeed my coming baby girl for at least 1 year and even as longer as possible.

K lah!! Very tired liao. Going to sleep soon.

Lol~. Amabel is so sweet! Wanna hug and kiss her now!

Hmmm.... the maximum maximum I can pump out now after a few hours lapse time early in the morning after I wake up is 5.5 oz.... miserable amount...

I am using Avent Uno and everytime I pump for around 15 minutes, my breasts are totally drained of milk liao. After that, I do use hand to express out some more, but that's usually max around 0.5 oz more only...

So if that'e the case, do I continue to pump for another 15 minutes to simulate my breasts even though there's no milk coming out anymore?? Or there's no point in doing that since the breasts are completely drained (and soft)liao...

Anonymous,
The key to increasing breastmilk production is make sure you empty the breasts completely every time and do it frequently and it will stimulate ur brain to produce more milk, within an week you will notice it do produce more milk. Must be patient to see the result and must be consistently doing it. If want to better stimulate the brain to produce more, perhap shorten the feeding/pumping interval will be a better way. Frequent breast-feeding / expressing increases your prolactin levels, which stimulates the breasts to produce more milk. Cause it tell ur brain that u see so fast my baby need milk already. So pls produce more for my baby. So not neccessary need to continue to pump longer even the milk already drained. This is what I know lah, hope someone more pro in breastfeed can correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for sharing. it's very useful! wow... seemed like a lot of hardwork but I do hope I can perservere. Already my mum is telling me nowadays formula milk is as good as breastmilk and that it's troublesome to do breastfeeding because baby will keep waking up. I anticipate I will get some obstruction on breastfeeding from those older generation later.. sigh.

"Breastmilk is the normal food for babies; God designed babies to need breastmilk. Breastfeeding helps them to grow strong physically and emotionally. "

I noticed that I never write before how I store my excess breastmilk after latching on and when I started going back for my work and the rules when come to giving expressed breastmilk. And will like to share what I enforce when I breastfeeding my girl. And like to share it with my friends. Those experience mommy or professional, do correct me if I am wrong. Or do share with me your opinion or what other impt thing I have missed out. Thanks!

I make sure the proper way of storing and handling breastmilk.
1. warming up the breastmilk
- cannot heat the breastmilk till very hot, it will destroy all the vitamin in the breastmilk though the antibodies is still there.

2. storing the breastmilk
- store it in clean and sterile bottles with screw caps, hard plastic cups that have tight caps, or nursing bags (pre-sterilized bags meant for breast milkair tight)
-Make sure the fridge and freezer is always clean, free from meat.
-Milk from different days or pumping sessions may be combined; the milk should be cooled in the refrigerator before it is combined. Milk that is warm or refrigerated should not be added to frozen milk. The milk should be labeled with the date the oldest milk was pumped. The oldest milk should be used first.

You can store it at room temperature:
- for i think up to 4 hours (at no warmer than 77 degrees Fahrenheit, or 25 degrees Celsius) for freshly pumped milk only.
I never keep the breastmilk in room temperature for so long before. Once pumped I will keep in the fridge or freezer immediately if not let my girl consume immediately.

You can store it in the refrigerator:
- I only stored in fridge for up to 48 hours at 32 to 39 degrees Fahrenheit (0 to 4 degrees Celsius)

You can store it in the freezer (be sure to leave about an inch of space at the top of the container or bottle to allow for expansion of the milk when it freezes):
I read that it can be stored
- for up to 2 weeks in a freezer compartment located inside the refrigerator

- for 3 to 4 months in a freezer that's self-contained and connected on top of or on the side of the refrigerator (but be sure to store the milk in the back of the freezer, not in the door).
I am using this kind of freezer. But I suggested to store max 6 weeks

- for 6 months or more in a deep freezer that's always 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-17.8 degrees Celsius)

Don't freeze milk you plan to use within three to five days because freezing destroys some of the antibodies. (However, frozen breast milk is still healthier than formula.)

But in reality there are no absolute guidelines for breast milk storage. The many variables include the type of freezer you have and how well it works.

3. time to finish the milk upon warming up.
- Have to finish the breastmilk within 1 hour upon warming up.
- And don't save milk from a bottle that your baby already drank out of.
- If I thaw frozen milk, I will refrigerate it and use it within 24 hours, but do not refreeze it.

4. To help pumped milk stay fresh longer,
- wash your hands and breast before pumping
- make sure the pump and collection bottles are very clean. I sterilised after each use.
- Refrigerate or freeze it soon after pumping — it will spoil faster if you keep it at room temperature.

Things to take note, do avoid herb and medication while breastfeeding.

Extensive research, especially in recent years, documents diverse and compelling advantages to infants, mothers, families, and society from breastfeeding and the use of human milk for infant feeding. These include health, nutritional, immunologic, developmental, psychological, social, economic, and environmental benefits.
Human milk is uniquely superior for infant feeding and is species-specific; all substitute feeding options differ markedly from it. The breastfed infant is the reference or normative model against which all alternative feeding methods must be measured with regard to growth, health, development, and all other short- and long-term outcomes.
Epidemiologic research shows that human milk and breastfeeding of infants provide advantages with regard to general health, growth, and development, while significantly decreasing risk for a large number of acute and chronic diseases.

So do try to total breastfeeding for half a year and continue till at least 12 months.
Do support Breastfeeding just like me.

Hi I used 'fridge-to-go' or the cooler bag that came with my Medela PIS breastpump to transport the breastmilk. I'm lucky cause my office got refrigerator. So after I expressed the milk will will put it in the refrigerator and when going back, transfer it to my fridge-to-go or cooler bag and bring back home. The fridge-to-go can keep the breastmilk in the right temp up to 8hrs/10hrs, cant remember liao. Even when I went out shopping with my girl, I use fridge-to-go to store the breastmilk, when feeding time I will warm it up for her to drink, if not will latch on outside.

Saw this poster pasted at the Breastfeeding room's door. Take a pic of it, wanna to encourage those who are breastfeeding now.

Treasure this special bonding with your baby, once you stopped it, you will never get it back again. Now I kana regret never breastfeed Amabel longer. Sigh...

But at least she still able to enjoy this 'perfect breastmilk' for 13 months. Is good enough right?

Hi sorry i missed your comment on this.

If i remember correctly I actually start to intro formula milk for one feed when my girl is 6 months onward. Then i think after she is 10 months I increase the formula to 2 feed per day then slowly increase the number of feed in per day with formula milk again after a few more month and in the 13th month I totally stop breastfeeding her. There is once when she is about 4 months i think, becos she drink damn lot of milk so my supply cannot meet her demand that i got no choice but to give her formula one feed per day for that two or three day where my supply cannot meet her demand. After that my supply increase slowly after my hard work in emptying the breast everytime to increase the supply, Then my girl goes back to totally drink breastmilk only.

As for the breastfeed, I tried Avent Manual breastpump, hand aching plus the suction not very good. Then i changed to Avent sigle electric breastpump, again the suction not good enough to emply my breastmilk well. After that I suffer from serious engorgement and my breast milk duct get blocked that I need to get from from lactation consultant to help me massage and unblock the duct and she asked me to use the heavy duty electric breastpump to help empty the breast better. So I bought the medela PIS advance breastpump. It worked very well for me and the suction is very good. But I very kiasu, wanna to simulate my brain to produce more milk and after i pump out the milk i still use hand to manually squeeze out the milk from my breast until no single drop of milk left. And my milk supply is damn lot. Bet 900 to 1.2litres per day if i remember correctly

title: A Traumatic Dream on Breastfeeding
date: Monday, October 15, 2007

I got to blog on this. It's such a trauma to me. I feel so lost, anxiety and sad.

I had my 2nd delivery and I don't know what had happened. I NEVER BREASTFEED THE BABY. Until almost 3 month later I discovered that I have never been breastfeeding my child. I suddenly feel so lost and keep thinking what's going on and what the hell I am doing. How can I not breastfeed my child. I find ways to produce breastmilk again. That feeling is indescribable. Even when I woke up from the dream, I still feel so lost and sad. I almost cry!

Maybe is due to that I kept thinking that it's a sin to stop breastfeeding Amabel after she turned 1, and had me with this bad dream. I will surely makeup to Amabel when I breastfeeding my 2nd child. Hope by that time she will still like the taste of BREASTMILK.

I still miss and love breastfeeding my girl, albeit mentally and physically fatigue

No more breastmilk for Amabel. Sob sob!

I have been reluctant to stop breastfeeding, but still I got to make up my mind. And today will mark the day I stop breastfeeding.

For the past few weeks, I have been slowly reducing the amount of breastmilk expressed and only express once every 48 hours. Thursday night till now, I not yet express milk. Since now my output every 2 days is only 20ml. I decided to stop expressing milk and officially stop breastfeed today.

I know my 1 year hard work in breastfeeding Amabel, will let her stay healthy with better immunity throughout the rest of her life.

Recap
Just read back all the entries on my pregnancy journey. Time fly really fast, just likes a lightning. You growth from a small bean sprout to a few millimeters to grams and then kilograms. Borned at the weight of 3.005kg to now about 7kg + (not sure about the weight now). I love the feeling of being pregnant. It's great to be pregnant! It's so amazing to see the tummy getting bigger and bigger. And I simply love the fluttering feel and your 武林腳. The delivery process is not so hard and I could tolerate it, is just that I couldn't endure the hottest whilst delivery and during confinement, think I'm too 補 and ate too much durian liao. Hence, resulting Amabel also hot and sweat easily. The one month confinement is a torture. The process of breastfeeding is not easy, I'm glad that I could preserve till now.

title: Mummy I love your milk
date: Monday, January 22, 2007

You will always look up at me and give me a very sweet smile when you latch-on half way and continue latching on then. Showing me that you enjoy this precious moment with Mummy. And i will hold your hand and smile back to you, showing you that i enjoying it too.
It's so heartwarming...

Came across this poem, and it's so encouraging

Mommy I love your milk so sweet and yummy,
It's the very best stuff for my little tummy.
Mommy when your patience is running low
at best, sit down, take a few deep breaths and
bring me to your breast.
Mommy hold me close to your soft warm chest
Because being in your arms is where
I like being best.
Mommy do not listen to those who say
I am spoiled.
It's just that you're my favorite person in the
whole wide world.

Mommy when their negative comments put you to the test.
Don't worry, trust yourself
Because mommy you know me best.

Mommy ignore them when they ask,
"Isn't it time to wean?"
Because when to stop is up to only you and me.

Mommy continue rocking me, sing another song.
I am still a baby, but not for very long.

After reading this, I told myself, I must preserve

Yikes! Why my frozen breastmilk taste so yucky, yet you still can drink.

My supply cannot meet your demand already. Got no choice but to supplement you with either frozen milk or formula milk on and off - once every few days. You are now drinking about 180ml of milk - 7 feeds per day and i can only squeeze out time to pump 4 times per day (luckily supply still maintain), at about 170 to 200ml per pump, morning first pump slightly more at about 300ml over.

My current weekdays timing is as follows:
>> 1st pump, wake up in pain (breast engorged) - between 6am to 6:30am
>> 2nd pump - about 11:30am
>> 3rd pump – about 4.30pm
>> 4th pump – about 9.30pm
After that, will spend some more time with you and pat you to sleep if you not yet sleep
Mostly, mummy will only managed to go sleep at earlier 11.30pm.

Wanna know how your milk milk is being stored after expressing out?

Mummy will keep your milk milk in the refrigerator, labeled with the date and time the milk is being pumped out and indicate the expiry date (max 48 hour) or excess breastmilk in the freezer for max 6 weeks.

If wanna freshest warm milk then of course will be direct latch-on le, which mummy enjoys the most. And you prefer the most.

hey dearie,

i've been checking your blog but can't find any entry but to my horror, there are so many outstanding entries for me to read today?! I thought that you have given up this space or too busy to update your life! Is there something wrong with my pc or blogger or maybe me? hee..

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear about those negative hearsays you have received for breastfeeding. In my opinion, ignore those people and just do what you deem fit and best for your own baby! They are not the ones who take care of amabel or do the tedious job of extracting milk and breastfeeding the baby what!

I know you are a GREAT mommy yeah. =)

Take care and call me if you need someone to talk to. I'll be there!

date: Wednesday, October 25, 2006
time : 5:56 PM

Received the reply from BMSG Counsellor on the problem i face:

Name: Apple
Baby age: 2months 2days
Breastfeeding status: total breastfeeding
Subject: Help! My gal don't want bottle.
Question: What i should do now? I need to go back work in mid of next month and my daughter, Amabel refused to drink from bottle at all. I have been giving my gal drink my ebm through bottle and also sometime latch on but out of the sudden, this few days my gal refused to drink from bottle. She will suckle a few mouthful of expressed milk from bottle then start crying then we got to comfort her and try offer her drink again but she will again suckle for afew mouthful then cried and that repeat again and it will take her an hour to finish the milk. Most of the time, we have to feed the baby the bottle before she wakes up but in light sleep mode, cause like that she won't really notice that the milk she drinking is from bottle. Sometime not to see her keep crying like this and got no choice but to let her latch on then she will stop crying immediate and happily drinking my breastmilk. But i can't keep letting her latch on cause i will need to work and love to let her latch on when i am at home with her. What should i do so she will drink from bottle while i am away from work and will also latch on when i am back? Please help!

BMSG E-Counsellor wrote:
Dear Apple,
Some breastfed babies are smart enough to refuse the bottles if the mother is present since they know what's BEST for them. Do not be too worried first. Firstly, were you very near to your baby when you tried to get someone to introduce the bottle? It is normal for a breastfed baby to refuse EBM if he knows the mother is nearby and will be confused why wouldn't the mother be direct feeding instead. Most babies will not take a bottle if they know their mother is nearby, because they associate their mother with the pleasure of nursing. To begin, I would suggest you get away while you find someone to introduce the bottle. These are some of the ways that will help your caregiver to encourage your baby to taking a bottle:
- Try offering the bottle before the baby is likely to be too hungry, before his usual nap time, as he may be more cooperative about trying something new. You can try to feed the baby the bottle before she wakes up but in light sleep mode, you can tell by observing your child if she is starting to have somelight movements and on the verge of waking up.
- Hold the baby lovingly while giving the bottle.
- Wrap the baby in the mother's clothing with her smell on it (eg. your home wear or night gown) while offering the bottle.
- Instead of pushing the bottle nipple into the baby's mouth, try laying it near his mouth and allow him to pull it in himself, or tickle the baby's mouth with the bottle's nipple, just as how many mothers do with the breasts.
- Try running warm water over the bottle nipple to bring it up to body tempature, like the breast.
- You may have to try different bottle nipples to find a shape, a substance (rubber or silicone), and a hole size that the baby will accept more receptively. Some babies prefer a larger or smaller nipple hole or different nipple types and shapes.
- Try different feeding positions. Some babies will take a bottle better in the nursing position, others like to sit propped against the caregiver's raised legs (like sitting in an infant seat), etc. - Try to feed the baby while moving rhythmically -rocking gently, walking, or swaying from side to side - because this may be calming to him; some babies who refuse a bottle at other times will take a bottle when they are riding in a car seat.
- Insert the bottle nipple in to the baby's mouth while he is sleeping.
- Keep trying, but remember the baby can be fed the mother's milk using other feeding methods, such as cup or spoon, if the baby continues to refuse the bottle.
Some babies also do go on "reverse-cycle nursing", ie. drinks rather little in the day or when the mother is away, and go on a "nursing marathon" to catch up with all the milk feeds when the mother is back home.
Last but not least, keep up with your breastfeeding efforts. Remember that it wasn't a mistake that you have always offered breasts first to your baby as direct feeding is the BEST. Bottle refusal is usually a transitional phrase and eventually your baby will recognise that if you're not around, she will have to take a bottle as subsitute.
All the best!
Cheers

Just now immediately after reading the above email, we went to 'Great world city' to buy a NUK latex teat (already got a NUK bottle but the teat is silicon one), cause I read somewhere that latex teat texture is more like mother's nipple. Hoping that this will work on you since you don't like to drink from Avent bottle. Came back home, I faster wash and sterilize the teat and bottle, going to give you after your shower. And surprised... today you don't want to leave the bath tub at all. When Rasiti carry you from the bath tub, you start crying then she put you in the water again and you stop crying. I ran into the room when hearing you crying and asked her why you crying. I asked her to put you back into the tub and you stop crying immediately. Being worried that you will catch a cold since the water will turn cold eventually, we got no choice but to leave you up again and dressed you and of course you cried when we leave you up. Haha! You really like water a lot. Hope can bring you go swimming soon. I passed Rasiti my clothes that I wore just now and place it on your body. Rasiti start feeding you whilst I stay at your room surfing net. After 5minutes, never hear you cry at all then I peek at you and asked Rasiti you got drink milk or not. Rasiti reply: oh... Amabel finished the milk already.
Mummy reaction: Huh! Mummy asked: Amabel finished the milk in how long? Rasiti replied: 5mins. Mummy reaction: Wow! Me feel so happy and surprise cause everytime you will take about an hour to finish the milk. But got to try again in your next feed later, to make sure it work. Haha... ...
