title: Baby 6th Month Scan
date: Wednesday, May 07, 2008
time : 11:00 PM

7 May 2008 - 6th Month Scan (Today 24 weeks 6 day)

Went for the 6th month scan. Everything is fine.
So happy to see her again on the screen.
Our 2nd flower is now weighted 667 grams (Amabel is 628grams @ 24 weeks 1 day).
Asked Dr Khi to measure and let me listen to the heartbeat. The heartbeat rate is about 123 beat per minutes. Amabel was shocked where the sound came from.
Dr Khi said baby is shy, using her hand covering her face.
The antibiotic that I taken doesn't seem to cure the bacteria; gynae prescribed another one for me.
I told her baby is very active and the movement is very powerful; she commented very good.
Asked Dr Khi whether I can eat cheese everyday, she said is good to eat cheese because of it nutrient.
But I think I put on a lot of weight because of that? I gained 1.9kg in 3 weeks at the weight of 46.8kg and waist measured 31.5 inches. But compared to the size when I'm expecting Amabel; 48.4kg @ 24 weeks 1 days.
Now I am slimmer.

Just yesterday, hubby suddenly looks at me with an irritating smile on his face and said: "Why your face suddenly look so FAT!!"
Faint... sian 1/2...
Why FATs alway accumulated on my face not body?
Then he added: "aiya... you married and got kids liao, don't have to bother about look anymore."
I am thinking, even married with kids still must maintain mah.
I don't want in future I regret never taking care of my look.
But of course NOT during pregnancy, cause baby is alway the most importance.
Anyway I never been on diet before; I couldn't resist food at all.

Everyday, all my colleague sure look at me again and again and repeat again and again this...
"We see your front from top to toes and see your back from top to toes, you doesn't seen like a pregnant women at all"
and they said "You unlike most pregnant women. We saw so many pregnant women before, you're the only one who are pregnant but doesn't look like pregnant".
"You're so slim" etc,

I think is because I got a pointed protruding belly rather than expanding sideway so from front or back doesn't look like pregnant.

and I got an obvious protruding navel now

Amabel is sleeping now...

Whilst I'm going to finish this entry. Am waiting for my hairs to dry and to do some office work after this...

Blog again soon...

Hey girl, for me the first place to put on weight is also face, while I was forever complaining about my chubby face, my mama & granny's comforts me with :only those who know how to put on weight well, gain their fats on their face, not only the waist or arms.
Hmmm.. Kinda make sense somehow :)
Ps: You still look great!

Amabel is 20 months.

Another 4 more months she will be 2 years old and her meimei may be borned also. I really can't image how it will be like; Will I be stress out? Can we cope? Will my girl feel neglect? Too many worries and there maybe more problems between me and my husband, cause I never satisfy with what and how he can help in taking care the kids especially when come to two kids. Don't really dare to think of it. Just try my best to take care both, and I'm doing my part as a good mother already.

I may in the end resort in sending Amabel to childcare which I don't really wish to... With my maid so packed schedule, I doubt she will be able or got the time to handle two at a time!! So sending Amabel to childcare during weekday is the best arrangement I can think of. By then I may need to plan a new schedule for my maid and both my princess. Hope everything will run smoothly . . .

Here I share Amabel's daily routine for different stages. These are what I given to my maid to follow.

Not very clear though, those who want to it as a reference, leave down your email and i will send to you.

Not much update on Amabel's development. Only that she picks up another few words again like; put, song, lock, armpits...

And that day she surprised me; she suddenly came over to me, kiss and sayang my tummy. Sometimes out of sudden, she will hug and embrace me tighly. I feel really sweet!!

Picture...

I brewed red date tea for myself on Sunday, Huihui get to taste it too. Hehe!!

The little one's movement in the womb is getting stronger and stronger, no more fluttering feeling, more like she is punching. I can't wait to see her in next appointment. Hope she is growing well.

Hey, personally I think sending Bel to a child care is a brilliant idea! there she receives structured activities in a properly set up environment that will help her grow up. As u know I'm not working but I'm also looking into sending Arianne to a child care. In fact, I'm on the search for a good one now. Maybe just for half a day. I think she can learn more things but I also have to be prepared in exposing her to viruses!

Well, I guess that's part and parcel of growing up huh..

Yah that is what I think also. I am looking at the childcare under my company benefit. It is much cheaper also and will take sometime to find out more on that childcare before I decide. Too many thing to take note like their menu, number of teacher to how child etc cause if send her there, it will be a whole day

Waited a long time for the detailed fetal scan in TMC. We did not wait long for my turn. Sonographer is a very sweet lady, she said baby is very active and is playing happily with the cord. She likes my baby's nose and feature; keep capture the side view of my baby which show a very sharp facial features. I kinda like it too. I am very happy with the gender of the baby. But when she measured the lenght of the femur. She said is slightly to the short side. This happened to Amabel too but slighlt better than Amabel. But still I become moody because of that. But I tell myself, see Amabel is fine now, she is a tall little chic. She measured the length of the arm bone, the leg bone, checked the heart with the blood flow, checked the kidneys, the brain, spine and also checked whether baby will has cleft lip. Everything is fine and normal. No signs of fetal anomaly were detected. Another sonographer came in to confirm that the femur length is ok. thanks god for giving me a healthy baby. Baby is weighted 346g now. Amabel accompanied me throughout the scan and she quietly sat beside me and she behave well, never scream or cry as what she usually like to. She's my good girl. Love her so much!

We visited Dr Khi after that and I told her my concern and she double confirm that baby is fine. Dr Khi laughs that why the sonographer take more pics of the baby facial feature.

And I gained 1.6kg in a month, to now 44.9kg

Is raining, thought got free transport but nevermind just have to walk more carefully, the road is so slippery. In the end, still decided to take a cab, worrying that I may fall down anytime. Waste money but better to be safe!

It takes me a long time to love a person but second to dislike a person. Instead of making me love him more, he’s lessened it.

Tomorrow is my Detailed Scan. Not nervous about the gender but more on baby’s health. This time, I will just bring along my precious Amabel to accompany me for the scan. Will only release the news of the gender to her. Have to let my grandmother-in-law know also and maybe my mum, sister, good friends and cousins. Not decided to tell anyone else. Have shortlist a few English name for the baby, I will decide when get to know the gender, will ask Amabel which she prefers.

And it takes some fears to make you trust
It takes some tears to make it rust
It takes the dust to HAVE it polished...

Communicating effectively with the unborn baby. In mandarin, we call it ‘tai jiao 胎教’.

It’s pouring heavily outside.
I can’t help but to sing this song to the little one in my womb. Amabel is not around if not I'll be singing it to her too.

Rain rain go away,
Come again another day.
Little Children wants to play; Rain, rain, go away…
It’s raining, it’s pouring.
The old man is snoring, he went to bed,
And bumped his head, And couldn't get up in the morning.
Such a good weather, but I couldn't hug both my precious now.

I have been talking to my unborn baby; I switch on Mozart Effect (for baby) or soothing music (like kelvin kern’s piano- a good choice) for baby to listen at night, and start letting baby gets acquainted with my voices. I read storybook to Amabel and to baby in the womb too. I told baby what is happening outside here, what I’m doing. I ask baby questions though he/she unable to answer back. Maybe she/he does reponse, but with their kick.

I do it the same when I’m expecting Amabel. I believe, that’s why Amabel is a music lover. She sings and dances along with any music. She loves music and singing song! And I love seeing her do that.

And baby’s kick/movement is getting more powerful. Fluttering and beating… So active!

Shall stop here. Hubby on the way to pick me up, going off now.
Need to bring Amabel for her vaccination now. I miss her!

title: I’m approaching 20 weeks soon.
date: Wednesday, April 02, 2008
time : 10:47 PM

I’m approaching 20 weeks soon.
What changes I have? My stomach and boobs getting much bigger and I’m starting to experience leg aching after standing for too long or walking too much. I need a lot of effort just to climb up steps of stairs; feeling breathless too. Luckily I got my hubby to gentle massage my legs for me. I don’t really feel like carrying a heavy ‘ball’ in my tummy but I do feel the hardness of my belly where often the top edge of the tummy is bump to the lower rib bone if I never sit up straight; it can be uncomfortable. Soon I will not be able to see my toes when standing upright. I never gain much weight but I think I look weird; my belly is firm and quite obvious to my petite size. Do I look like alien? I noticed a lot of people like to look at me from top to toes then my tummy. Same for my first pregnancy. But I am proud of it, never have the intention to hide my beautiful belly.

More about body changes:

1) Nausea
This is commonly known as morning sickness but one can still feel nauseous any time during the day. I got a very serious morning sickness for my 2nd pregnancy compare to the 1st one. It is 24/7 sickness; I feel nausea all day. According to gynae, to lessen this, do eat small frequent meals. I am a huge eater and with small frequent meal don’t seem to help much. So I choose to continue eating my usual huge portion of meal. The morning sickness ceased when I approached 14 weeks.

2) Cravings or aversion for certain food
Most women will experience this. Some may be averse to food or smells that they once like. Others might like food and smells that they once loathe. For myself, I do like to take spicy food, these are the only food that can trigger my tastebud and make me not feel so sick while eating.
After morning sickness gone, appetite getting better and I can eat even more than usual. And I eat all food. My record 3 full bowl of foods at one go and buffet - I am good at it, definitely worth the money. Lol~

3) Stretch Marks
Some people said it is genetically inherited and no lotion or cream can prevent stretch marks. I didn’t see my mum got any stretch marks so I supposedly I won’t like it also? I never get much stretch mark in my first pregnancy; only one or two of it. Though so, I do still feel worry that I may get it from the 2nd one. To make myself feel better, I do buy stretch marks lotion to apply every night after bathe. Sometime I do get lazy. Hehe but so far, there is no additional and obvious stretchmark showing. Thanks God!

4) Linea Nigra
I got a very obvious Linea Nigra in my first pregnancy. Now the mark is still there though is fading. Here come the 2nd pregnancy; I think it will get obvious soon again. Linea nigra refers to the dark vertical line that appears on the abdomen during pregnancy. The brownish streak is usually about a centimeter in width. The line runs vertically along the midline of the abdomen from the pubis to the xiphoid process - the bottom-most part of the ribcage in the center or tip of the sternum.
It is caused by pregnancy hormones that increase production of the pigment melanin, also known as hyperpigmentation. Why this process of hyperpigmentation occurs in a straight vertical line is uncertain. Before it appears it may be more faintly visible as a linea alba ("white line").
Linea negra tends to appear around the second trimester and may or may not disappear within a few months after birth. Some research suggests there may be a link between linea nigra and insulin. Supplementing the diet with folic acid is said to reduce the discoloration.
There is an old wives' tale associated with this line... if the linea negra runs to the navel, it's a girl, and if it goes all the way up to the xiphoid, it's a boy. My 1st pregnancy, the line runs to the bottom of ribcage but I got a baby girl, so this may not be true.

Pic showing my linea Nigra and stretch mark left from first pregnancy

Pic taken 1 month ago.

5) Skin Changes
Most of the common skin diseases seen in pregnancy are of no risk to the mother or baby and are simply the marks of motherhood and a tolerable inconvenience. The common aggravating condition chloasma (the mask of pregnancy), bad acne, eczema and psoriasis, does send some women to the dermatologist. However, depending on your hormones and skin condition, you may not suffer from these problems. Some women develop rashes and some are completely unaffected. If you have had a long-term acne condition, you may be surprised to find that it clears up during pregnancy. Also, having a rash during your first pregnancy does not automatically mean that the rash will return for subsequent pregnancies. For myself, I do start to notice a lot of tiny pimples appearing on my face and occasionally I will have big acne appearing. That troubling me a lot and seriously I found that dark spot is getting more on my cheekbone. Argh……….

6) Heartburn
Heartburn or pyrosis is a painful or burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone caused by regurgitation of gastric acid. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. It's caused by some of the hormonal and physical changes in your body.During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up, which causes that unpleasant burning sensation. Progesterone also slows down the wavelike contractions of your esophagus and intestines, making digestion sluggish. Later in pregnancy, your growing baby crowds your abdominal cavity, pushing the stomach acids back up into the esophagus. Many women start experiencing heartburn and other gastrointestinal discomforts in the second half of pregnancy. It usually comes and goes until your baby is born.
Frankly speaking, till now I still don’t know what is the feeling of heartburn. I think I never had it before.

7) Leg cramps
I really don't know why women have more leg cramps when they're pregnant. I not yet got leg cramp but my legs is aching quite often after standing or walking for some times. Leg cramp may be due to your heart, kidneys, and circulatory system work extra hard to help you function normally during pregnancy, and your muscles, which are bearing the increasing weight of your pregnancy, feel the strain, too. So as a result, your tired leg muscles may seize up and cramp in protest, especially during your second and third trimester. The pain can wake you from a deep sleep. I tried that because in my 1st pregnancy and I got to shout to my husband for help. Muscle fatigue isn't the only reason you may be suffering from leg cramps. Too much phosphorus (found in processed meat, snack foods, and soda) and too little calcium and potassium circulating in your blood can also cause muscle spasms. Another reason maybe as your uterus expands, it can put pressure on the nerves leading from your trunk to your legs.

Here are some other tips for keeping muscle spasms at bay:
• Avoid standing or sitting with your legs crossed for long periods of time.
• Rotate your ankles and wiggle your toes when you sit, watch TV or having meals.
• Stretch your calf muscles several times before you go to bed.

For myself….
During the day, simple exercises like wriggling your toes to lessen the cramps.
And I get my husband to massage my legs for me.

At night, I got a habit of resting my legs on pillows when sleeping, I believe it do help to prevent leg cramp cause that they are elevated at a higher level than your hip for better blood circulation. Cover my legs with blanket or wear sock to prevent legs from getting too cold if sleeping in an air-con room.

How to get rid of leg cramps
If you do get a cramp, stretch the muscle straight away. Straighten your leg, heel first, and gently flex your ankles and toes. It might hurt at first, but the pain will gradually go away. You can also relax the cramp by massaging the muscle or warming it with a hot-water bottle. Walking around for a few minutes may help.

8) Backache
This may be caused by the growing uterus, stretching of the ligaments and your posture. To prevent backache, you can:-
a) sit up straight on a chair with back support. Use a pillow to support your back.
b) stand straight, do not slouch.
c) always bend your knees and keep your back straight when lifting or putting down heavy boxes.
d) when getting up from a lying position, roll to your side and put your feet down to the ground., then get up slowly with the help of your hands.
I am lucky, no backache when expecting my girl and this one so far no also.

9) Frequent visits to the bathroom
This happens during pregnancy when the uterus is expanding and pushing against the bladder. Every night, I got to wake up at least once to pee.

10) Bleeding / Spotting during pregnancy
Any bleeding in pregnancy MUST be checked by your gynea. It can be due to many reasons, a threatened miscarriage, low placenta or separation of the placenta from the uterus.

11) Constipation and piles
If happens that you do get piles, consult your doctor. High-fibre foods like fruits, vegetables, wholemeal bread and cereals can help you prevent constipation and piles. I have this problem and I think I need to get some medicine from gynae to soften the stool.

12) Tender / sore breast
Breast tenderness is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. It usually starts around 4 to 6 weeks and lasts through the first trimester. Hormonal changes during pregnancy cause increased blood flow and changes in the breast tissue, which may make your breasts feel swollen, sore, tingly, and unusually sensitive to touch. The sensation is like an exaggerated version of how the breasts feel before period, sometime I do feel abit like I am having mild engorgement, the feeling I got when I breastfeeding my girl. What other changes can I expect? Starting at around 8 weeks, your breasts also begin to get bigger, and they'll continue to grow throughout your pregnancy. It's common to go up a cup size or two, especially if it's your first baby. Your breasts may feel itchy as the skin stretches, and you may even develop stretch marks on them. You may be able to see veins under the skin of your breasts, and you may find that your nipples are getting bigger and darker. After the first few months, your areolas — the pigmented circles around your nipples — will also be bigger and darker. You may not have noticed the little bumps on your areolas before. But now these bumps, which are a type of oil-producing gland called Montgomery's tubercles, may become much more pronounced. Your breasts go through these changes in preparation for nursing your baby. Around your third month of pregnancy, your breasts start producing colostrum (which is the best nutritious for the newborn) the special milk your baby will get when he first starts nursing. During the last few months of pregnancy, you may begin to leak a small amount of this thick yellowish substance, although some women start to leak earlier and some never leak at all.
You may find that bras with underwires are less comfortable now. Your best bet is to find a few good, supportive bras. To prevent chafing, look for soft material with no seams near the nipple. Cotton bras will be more comfortable and breathable than synthetic. For extra support during the day, I do wear a maternity bra. (During your third trimester, you might want to invest in a nursing bra, since you'll need one anyway if you'll be breastfeeding.) For nighttime, try a pregnancy sleep bra — a soft, nonrestrictive cotton bra available at maternity stores. I usually don’t wear. Keke! Consider buying your bras with a bit of room to grow, since you may go up a size or two (both in cup size and chest circumference) as your breasts grow and your belly expands. Choose the ones that fit when the clasp is on the tightest setting, so you'll have some room to let them out.

Exercise that help in Breast Tightening
This exercise will strengthen the muscles that support your growing breasts.
1. Raise both your arms to shoulder level.
2. Use each hand to grip the other arm above the wrist. Keep both arms parallel to the floor.
3. Push your elbows toward each other and tighten your breasts muscles at the same time.
4. Hold this position for about 2 to 3 seconds, and then relax.

If you cannot feel your breast muscles tighten, raise your arms higher.

13) White Discharge
This is very common during pregnancy too. One tends to have more virginal discharge then usual. I do have lot of discharge, making me worry. I have an infection once during this pregnancy and was on medication. I am going to consult gynea again for testing, think it came back again. And I am using Stellisept scrub (antiseptic) to ensure cleaniness there.

More information I found online
What you're noticing is probably normal leukorrhea — the odorless or mild-smelling milky discharge that you occasionally noticed in your underwear before you were pregnant. There's just a lot more of it now, partly because of increased estrogen production and greater blood flow to the vaginal area. This discharge is made up of secretions from the cervix and vagina, old cells from the walls of the vagina, and normal bacterial flora from the vagina. You'll probably notice more vaginal discharge as you approach labor, although it's likely to look somewhat different from the flow you've become accustomed to. In very early pregnancy, cervical secretions filled your cervical canal and created a protective barrier — the so-called mucus plug.As your cervix begins to efface (thin out) and dilate, it may expel this mucus, and you'll notice discharge that looks like egg white or mucus from a runny nose on a cold day. You may even expel the plug in one gelatinous glob. This discharge might be tinged with a bit of blood.
When should I call my caregiver? If there's a lot of thin, clear discharge, it can be hard for you tell if it's just mucus or if you're leaking amniotic fluid. If you have any doubt, contact your midwife or doctor.Call your practitioner right away if you're not yet at 37 weeks and you notice an increase in discharge or a change in the type of discharge (if it becomes watery, mucus-like, or bloody — even if it's just tinged with pink or brownish old blood). This can be a sign of preterm labor. You should also call your caregiver if you suspect that you have an infection. If you have an odorless, whitish discharge that's causing you discomfort such as itching or burning — or your vulva looks inflamed — you might have a yeast infection. If your discharge is foul-smelling or frothy or yellow, green, or gray, you might have a different kind of vaginal infection or a sexually transmitted infection, even if you don't have symptoms of irritation, itching, or burning.

These are so far what I can think of.

Lastly...Hope I still can get back my pre-pregnancy figure after delivery.

Fetal Movement = Termed as ‘Quickening‘.

I started to feel very mild baby movement since yesterday morning. Before I fell asleep, I lying quietly on the bed and stay still my position just to feel my baby movement once again. I felt the baby gentle move again. I just love the feeling. Really hope can feel the baby movement more often!! Simply like that kind of fluttering feeling, like butterfly flying against the inner skin of my tummy. That is the most amazing part of both my pregnancy. That’s why I love being pregnant.

From my experience on first pregnancy.
Pregnant woman will not feel the baby until sometime after 16 weeks, even though the baby actually already started moving at 7 or 8 weeks. Just like what we see on the ultrasound during the gynae visit. Like my first pregnancy I could feel the fetal movement as early as 16 weeks. Current one is slightly later, though some people said that veteran mom might notice the movement earlier than first time moms cause a woman who has been pregnant before can more easily distinguish her baby's kick. And also thinner women tend to feel movement earlier and more often than women who carry more weight.

At first the kicks you notice will be few and far between. You may feel several movements one day and then none the next day. Actually the baby is moving and kicking regularly causes many of his jolts & jerks are not yet strong enough for us to feel. But in 2nd trimester onward, those movements will become stronger and more regular.

I’ll be expecting more obvious movements from now on. Hee~

And Huihui does raise her concern and worry about lesser movement on certain days. If you worry, start keep track and count the number of movement (kicks, twitches and whole body movements all counted) each day once you are feeling the baby movement regularly. Pay attention to them and let your gynea know once if you notice a large decrease in your baby's movement. Less movement may signal a problem. Dr Khi do have the Fetal Movement Chart Form. You can get one from her to start counting the movement each day. I couldn’t remember the number of count per day the baby movement should have, Shall check with her tomorrow.

~ Today my lil baby mouse are 17 weeks and 1 day. ~

title: Baby Girl or Boy?
date:
time : 8:25 AM

Tomorrow morning, I will be going for my checkup again. If baby cooperate well, I may get to know the gender already. If not got to wait till detailed scan. Anyway, I’m not excited about knowing the sex of the baby but I know my friends and relative are. Initially, I very wish to have a baby girl this time round again. I used to get sad over, when the Chinese physician read my pulse said that it seem to be like I am having a boy, I feel like crying after I heard what she said. And when friend guessing that I’m having a boy. I love kid so why am I so concern about the gender… this is what I thought and I know that the baby health is more important than anything else. As long as she/he is healthy, I will be happy. It really doesn’t matter to me anymore.

Anyway this is how sex of the baby determined that I got to learn it from my gynae.

The sex of the baby is already determined at the time of fertilization of the egg and sperm. Because all normal mature eggs contain only one X chromosome (the female sex chromosome). Sperms may carry a Y (male) chromosome or an X chromosome. A female baby results when an X sperm fertilizes the egg, resulted with XX, while a boy results when a Y sperm fertilizes the egg, resulted with XY.

So how do you choose a baby sex?

I don’t really believe baby sex can be choose lah but there are many theories that the baby’s sex can be selected by some regimens. However, none of these have any good supportive evidence.

Anyway, these are some of the theories (based on assumption)

Y chromosome (male) sperm is smaller and lighter, and like alkaline conditions.
X chromosome sperm is larger and are more acid resistant.

The normal vaginal pH is acidic.

Therefore, all factors manipulating the conditions of the vagina pH will affect whether the X or Y chromosome sperm get to the egg first.

As for diet

For baby boy: Choose ”alkaline” food such as vegetables (green vegetable), fresh fruits and soya bean products. On the other hand, husband should take “acidic” food.

For baby girl: Choose ”acidic” food such as meat, beans, coffee, cheese, eggs, fish and diary products. On the other hand, husband should take “alkaline” food.

Anyway don’t take it so serious in determine the sex. Again nothing is more important than the baby health.

Going for the First Mums’ Congress by Abbott after my gynae visit. More interested in Zoe Tay and Ivy Lee experience, how they maintain health lifestyle and stay pretty and also the talk by Shichida Method Executive Director, Mrs Jocelyn Khoo on Secret to a Genius Child.

Fertility Awareness

So you want to have a baby!

I got friends who have married and are trying to conceive for months. They asked me how to make their chance higher. I do explain to them. A few days ago, I was chatting with a friend who is still single but we talked about conceiving and she is interested to know more about it also. So I am thinking to write it in my entry. Most of the information below, I gets to know it from my gynae. I never asked her for all this info but she is thinking I may want to try it for 2nd one when I went to visit her a few month ago for my annual checkup before I actually conceive with my 2nd one. Before that, I already have knowledge about fertility and how it works, from somewhere else before I expected with my first child. But after my gynae explain to me more detail with a brochure for reference. I start to know even more and will like to share with my friends or other who is reading. I love kid and I love my friend to have kid also. So happy trying k. Hee!

And yah, yesterday have a long chat with a friend, Catherine, who is expecting a baby boy now also. Congrats to her! I get to know her when I actually found her to help me to do my wedding cartoon animation. And she really done a very good job, we like the animation so much. I didn’t know that she has been reading my blog everyday since it started. She read what I blog about my 1st pregnancy journey, breastfeeding my girl, my girl growing journey etc She asked me why now I never write much about my 2nd pregnancy and requested me to write more about the unborn one. And I am real happy to know that my blog do provide a lot of useful information to her. Ok I promise I will write more about my this pregnancy and provide more info that I know.

Ok here it is…

You need to know more about your fertility, which can help you understand about human sexuality and reproductive health.

You will need to identify the signs and symptoms of fertility during the menstrual cycle, so that you know which days you are fertile and which days you are not. This can increase your chances of being pregnant.

The Ovary and Egg (Ovulation)

Your ovaries at birth contain about 400,000 follicles, which are balls of cells with an immature egg in the center. Only about 300-500 of these will develop into mature eggs.

During each cycle, several follicles will prepare to ripen. One of these follicles will ripen and release an egg. After the egg leaves the ovary, it is pricked up by the fallopian tubes and travels down to the uterus.

There are only appro. 24 hrs after an egg’s release in which it is capable of fertilization.

Important Hormones to know about
Hormones play an important part in your fertility. Hormones are chemicals which are released into the blood (eg by the ovaries and pituitary gland) and which travel to another part of the body (eg the uterus or breast) where they produce a particular effect.

There are 4 impt hormones that control the menstrual cycle and ovulation. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) are produced by the pituitary gland, and stimulate the ovaries. The ovaries in turn produce oestrogen and progesterone which stimulates the uterus, and which also have “feedback” effects on the production of LH and FSH.

The Menstrual Cycle (When Do You Ovulate?)

The first day of menstruation is referred to as Day 1 of the cycle. The length of the cycle is usually around 28 days, but it varies from 21 or less to over 35 days in a long cycle.

Basically, whether your menstrual cycle is long or short, you would probably ovulate 14 days (give or taken 24 hrs either way) before the beginning of your next period. In other words, for a short cycle of 21 days, ovulation will occur around day 7 and for a long cycle of 35 days, ovulation does not occur until around day 21

A very useful chart I found online.

Another method is Uterus, Cervix, Cervical Fluid (Mucus)
Although you may be not accustomed to checking your cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus, it undergoes changes during the menstrual cycle under the influence of oestrogen and progesterone. The best way to describe these change is SHOW which stand for Soft, High, Open and Wet. These words describe what happens when you are at your fertility perk – cervix Soften, retreat Higher up inside the body 9lengthening the vagina), Opens to allow sperm easy passage into the uterus and beyond, and becomes Wetter (due to the presence of the cervical mucus).

See the third row. I can only found this, though not very clear

The cell lining the cervical canal produce the mucus secretions continuously, but the quality and quantity vary considerably throughout the cycle depending on the influence of the two hormone oestrogen and progesterone.

During the menstrual and pre-ovulation phase of the cycle, the oestrogen levels are low, the mucus is thick and sticky. This mucus forms a plug, blocking the cervical canal and preventing the entry of the sperm.

Approximately 5 to 6 days before ovulation, the mucus starts to flow into the vagina, under the influence of increasing oestrogens. Your fertile time begins when you feel a sensation of discharge from the virgina. The mucus usually starts with a day or two of sticky mucus, which becomes increasingly creamy, wet, slippery and sometimes like egg white. As ovulation approaches, the mucus becomes more fluid and thinner. This mucus contains an elastic gel-like substance. Sometimes, you can even stretch between your fingers for a few inches. It sounds yucky right.

I found this in a webby. Not mine ok.

This fertile mucus helps protect sperm from acid secretions in the vagina, nourish and keep sperm alive for several days and aids sperm migration.

The last day of mucus with any fertile characteristics is called the mucus peak day. Ovulation occurs anywhere from two days before to two days after peak day. You are considered fertile from the time the mucus appears until the 4th evening after peak day.

Following ovulation, the mucus again becomes thick and sticky, and again form a plug at the cervix and prevent sperm entry.

SPERM
Sperm is propelled out of the urethra during ejaculation. Between 2 to 5ml of fluid containing around 100,000,000 sperm cells per ml may thus be released. Only about 100 sperm can survive the long journey to reach the egg and only one will finally penetrate the egg to achieve fertilization and pregnancy. Sperm can travel an inche in 8 mins and can reach an egg in less than 30mins. In general, they may survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 72 hrs in the presence of the fertile mucus. If you are not at the fertile time of your cycle, the sperm will die within a matter of hours.

How do you detect ovulation?
You now know that the egg must be fertilized by a sperm within 24 hrs after its release, and that sperm can survive for up 72 hrs in the fertile mucus. Therefore predicting when ovulation occurs and planning intercourse accordingly can increase your chances of getting pregnant significantly.

If you intend to use a Thermometer
This makes use of the fact that temperatures are low before ovulation and slightly higher afterward. Usually the body temperature arise about 0.2 degree following ovulation and maintains it at this higher level until the time of next menstruation. You will need a special kind of thermometer called a basal body thermometer (which measures in tenths of a degree) and plot a chart to interpret the results over a period of time. You need to realize that the shift in temperature means that ovulation have already taken place

If you intend to use a Ovulation Predictor Kit

Some info for you ->
When you are about to ovulate, your body produces a large amount of luteinicing hormone (LH), which triggers the release of a ripened egg from your ovary.

This “LH” surge tell you that ovulation is likely to occur in the next 24-48 hrs. Ovulation Predictor Kit is a test to detect the LH surge in your urine, thereby helping you to do pinpoint this surge and help you predict when you will ovulate. For more info abt Ovulation Predictor Kit, you may want to consult your gynae or fertility specialist for more info.

That is all I know from my gynae. Hope it does help.
For those who have been trying to conceive for more than half a year. I would advise you to seek doctor for help.

wow! such a long post and very informative. hey, I got mentioned! I took a long time to conceive so it can be really difficult even if I know all these information. Sometimes, it's timing or luck. To those who is trying to conceive, good luck!
I like your blog because I can always get some thoughts after reading the entry, no matter if it's just photos. And ha, perfect english is good. Some bloggers like to use slangs or shortforms.
I've been leaving some comments from time to time if you noticed. Signed with 'Cat'. :)

Yaya agreed that it tie to luck and timing. My English is not perfect, my english result is not good. hehe! But I do try to avoid using slangs or shortforms, cause I don't wish my kids to read my blog in future with all these improper English. I do try to learn and talk to my girl with proper English w/o add in malay or chinese in it.

title: 5th Month Detailed Scan. It's a Princess!!
date: Wednesday, April 19, 2006
time : 6:31 PM

Went for my detailed scan on 17 April 06 (Mon). Appointment at 10 o'clock in the morning. We reached TMC level 4, at 9.45am. Only started having the scan at 10.35am. I went into the room with your daddy. Lying on the examination couch, holding the goddess pendant from your grand-ganny. Mood - "Panic". This detailed scan is so important to any mummy-to-be. The sonographer checked your organs, features, heart, brain, almost everything. Eyes kept staring at the ultrascan screen, and at the same time peek on the sonographer expressions. Hoping everything are ok. Not much expression shown on her face nor she said anything. Finally cannot tahan and
I asked: is everything ok?
Sonography: Yes. Everything is fine and you are having a baby girl.

Words to describe my feeling - Relieved and Joy

Headed to level 3 to see Dr Khi, she explained the results to us. The result is within the range. Went to Toa Payoh Kiddy Palace and had our lunch there. After a tiring day, went back home and have a nap.

time : 5:25 PM

The fluttering movements is getting stronger and more frequent. Started to feel it since last Saturday. Felt that again 3 times on last Sunday too at 5pm before i went for a nap and become more frequent nowadays. Sometime it has been quite quiet in there. Haha... or maybe you haven't been kicking hard enough? Really hoping bb (my baby) will do it again!! Simply like that kind of fluttering feeling, like butterfly flying in my tummy. So amazing! Wondering what you are doing in there right now.

Today lunch time, went to NUH basement (mummy's company). There are having this Sundry Sales, saw the section selling kids barabara. They are promoting 'Personalized kids Music CD' and 'Picture Me Books - Where Imagination Play!'. Webby:
http://www.juzforkidz.com , contact 67280806. They help to personalise music that helps a child feel loved and special because it's filled with happy images, lots of fun and with your bb's name sung over 30 times throughout the songs. With Picture Me Books, children experience books on a personal level. we can simply insert child's photo into a book, and they become the star of each story - not only reading about themseleves, but actually see themselves in a variety of roles. Fun right? I think i will only buy it for you when Daddy and Mummy have confirmed your name and after you are born. Wink~
